Oxnard, California

Oxnard got its name from the Oxnard brothers, specifically Henry T. Oxnard who built a sugar beet factory here in 1897.  By the 1920's, Oxnard had become a favorite getaway spot for Hollywood's elite such as Ruldoph Valentinio, who filmed his best-known movie, "The Sheik" here.   John Wayne came to Oxnard for the great fishing.  Clark Gable who owned a home here, loved Oxnard as a place to play and relax.  All of which explains the local beach community names, Hollywood by the Sea and Hollywood Beach.  Farming remains a major industry with such crops that include Oxnard's world-famous strawberries, celery, broccoli, lima beans and cabbage.   The mild Mediterranean climate allows for year round activities.
